Letting Go of Your Expectations

by Michaeline on May 30, 2009

Are you constantly setting goals and action plans for yourself…for the life you think you want?

Don’t get me wrong. I am a big proponent of visioning, goal setting and action planning. In fact, my life coaching practice relies on those techniques. Setting goals gives you focus and ensures that you are using your time and energy efficiently. It provides you with a sense of purpose…a direction. Yet life happens. We have unexpected things occur such as a car accident, a loss of a job, or the flu. These things outside of your control require you to adjust to a new set of circumstances. Even positives such as a new baby or winning the lottery require you to be flexible and to reconsider your plans.

Key is your ability to accept what is happening and to let go of your original expectations when dealing with these unexpected turns of events. If you have the tendency to get stuck in your head, clinging to an idea of how you think life should go, you can have a hard time accepting anything that doesn’t comply with that idea. Life is unpredictable. There are unforeseen possibilities.

The curve balls that life throws at us are a way of keeping us alert and aware, which is a gift in and of itself; they are also often life’s way of bringing us wonderful surprises. Next time something unexpected comes your way, take a deep breath, say thank you, and open your mind to a new opportunity….the possibilities.
