The Journey Into Clutter Busting: My Basement a.k.a. the black hole

by Michaeline on March 5, 2011

Has your basement become the black hole where everything you don’t know what do with ends up? Mine has.

I have an unfinished basement that is divided into four areas: the furnace area, my husband’s workshop, a room the previous owners used for an office that is semi-finished and the main area. Well at this moment it is the black hole or dumping ground in my house.

I can tell you how it got that way. I can tell you that as a coach I am embarrassed that I again have a cluttered basement. I can tell you that I am committed to release myself of the clutter on this journey and share it with you so you may make the journey with me. I can tell you that my intention is to learn (and yes relearn) the daily practices that I need to do to prevent this from ever happening again.

Out of sight, out of mind…right? Wrong. Clutter whether you see it or not is distracting.

Remember that clutter is defined as anything that you don’t love, that you don’t use, too much stuff in too small of a space and anything unfinished.

So I did an assessment of the basement in my home and learned a lot. Amongst the holiday decorations, class/workshop materials and supplies, home décor, party supplies, memories, gift wrapping/mailing supplies, old furniture, garage sale piles, financial records and archived files there was an underlying cause. The reason why my basement got to this state again was the “excuse” of “I’ll do it later” or “I don’t have time for this now” or “I will put this here for now and take care of it the next time I come down”. Of course this never happened.

This is how I got to the stage of overwhelmed and total chaos reining.

So this is where I am starting from. My assessment is complete for now because I am sure I will learn more as I move forward.

As I continue to focus on the vision I have for my basement, I will spend time this week journaling about it and how I can incorporate this area into my daily practices. In addition, I will be developing a project plan for my basement de-cluttering. Will you join me in working on your basement or another de-cluttering project?
