Clutter Busting: Decisions Made This Week

March 29, 2014 by Michaeline

Well I had to challenge myself if I challenged you. So how did my week of “putting it where it belongs” go? It went well.

You can see the kitchen counter by the phone (my big hot spot). The laundry room does not have anything in it that is not related to laundry or that is not permanently stored there. And the stairs are clear (usually used as a staging area for moving things upstairs).

Lessons I learned from this challenge:

  • It takes less time to do something than I think.
  • There is less chaos in the house when things are stored where they belong (knew this just needed a reminder).
  • Having a clean and sparkly sink when I come downstairs in the morning starts the day on a positive note.
  • Clear counters and stairs make me happy and enthused to do more.

What lessons did you learn from this challenge?

Clutter Busting: Clutter = Delayed Decisions

March 22, 2014 by Michaeline

Are you feeling overwhelmed with too much stuff? Are you feeling too busy to handle the stuff in your life? Are you putting off handling things because you are feeling uncomfortable?

The more stuff we have in our lives, the more challenging it is to deal with. We can feel like we don’t know where to start so why bother. Having too much stuff in your life…too much paper, too many t-shirts or too many pots and pans can simply be because of delayed decisions.

So the question is why are decisions difficult for you? Are you avoiding working on your taxes because you don’t want to know your financial status? Are you leaving your house in disarray so you don’t have to deal with company? Are you not sorting the boxes or closet because you will have to deal with the feelings that will arise from the loss of a loved one? Are you afraid of making a “bad” decision? [Read more…]

  • Make shredding a normal step in opening the mail.
  • Immediately put it back where it belongs.
  • Set a timer for 15 minutes and speed eliminate one area.
  • Write down three positives you will experience by becoming clutter-free.

The Journey Into Clutter Busting: Make it Easier to Let Go!

July 30, 2011 by Michaeline

You may be holding onto your clutter for many reasons, but some of the top ones are:

• You think you will need it later.
• You paid good money for it.
• It might be valuable.
• It has sentimental value…Aunt Jane gave it to you for a wedding gift.
• It’s been in the family for years.

Here are some ideas to help you let go of items if you are holding on to things for sentimental or monetary reasons:

• Use the one-year rule. If you haven’t used something in a year chances are you will never use it.
• Discover the true value of an item. Go on eBay or CraigslistHowMuchIsItWorth.com for price guidelines for items you think are antiques and collectibles.
• Regift Aunt Jane’s vase to someone who will enjoy and display it, but follow regifting guidelines.
• Give a family treasure to another family member who will love it more than you do.

Make the commitment to let go of your clutter. Think about who can benefit from the items you are not using, make a plan and do it!
