If I haven’t convinced you yet, here is another reason for changing negative self-talk into positive self-talk…your internal diaglog can influence your self-esteem, outlook, performance, energy level and relationships. So here are a few more types of negative self-talk and their alternatives.
Focusing Only on Problems
Bottom line: complaining. Instead of dwelling on the problem seek solutions and ask yourself “How could I set boundaries so that I don’t miss my workout next time?”
Expecting the Worst
This practice promotes anxiety and will not encourage you to behave effectively. Instead ask yourself questions that lead to positive outcomes such as “How can prepare myself so I don’t overeat at the party?”
Negative Labels
These words lower our self-esteem and can become a part of our identity. Instead make statements about your behavior such as “I have made poor food choices in the past and I can change that behavior.”
Changing self-talk requires time and practice. You will have to consistently work on identifying your self-talk, asessing it and changing it for it to become second nature. Working with a life coach can help encourage you and build confidence through this process. For a free 30-minute sample coaching session contact me.
